The best GUI for her will be simpler, lighter weight, and more Windows like (just because she's used to Windows), so take that into consideration. and Mint will never do that.) Also since my mom needs almost no bells and whistles, again, I figured the simpler the better. (Or maybe I'm too used to Windows machines growing thick with unnecessary bloatware sludge over the years. I thought Xfce for my mom's because, even though it's a decent machine, it's not top of the line, and I figure going forward, the lighter GUI might help future-proof the machine a little. I will probably use Cinnamon for my machines. When I started using Ubuntu (I had been a Windows-only VB and Office developer) I just went with the default and have used it since, as it seemed to work fine for me (not that I didn't have my problems with it.) I have not yet used Mint at all so I have no direct experience with the various GUIs. I say all that to preface talking about my choice of GUI. That, and my lack of guru-ness means you'll probably be seeing a lot of me here in the future.

This machine for my mom will be my first foray into Mint usage, but I intend to convert my work PC and my home laptop to Mint soon. But I have been reading and decided that I want to move to Mint. Just as background, I'll let you know that I currently use Ubuntu every day for Rails and Drupal development, so I know my way around Unix well enough, but I am *no* guru. The same machine with an i5 costs $150 more and that seemed like a big step up. I thought this one was a good compromise there. I'm especially glad to hear you think the machine is plenty powerful for Mint, as we don't want to spend more than we need to, but we want a machine that will last her for a good long time. Thanks for your replies thus far, they are much appreciated. Thanks for any advice, warnings, tips, etc. Will that be an easy transition for her? I'd probably put the icons she needs most right on the desktop. I will likely run Xfce, as her needs are few and this is a good, lightweight GUI if I understand correctly. 4GB Single Channel DDR3 1600MHz (4GBx1) 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i3-4030U processor (3M Cache, 1.9 GHz) She has no printer, so that's not an issue. Can anyone comment on whether this computer from Dell will run Mint well with good performance and so that the DVD, wireless, USB ports, etc. (I've thought about a Chromebook, but the screens are too small for her.) So I don't need a super powerful computer and, I figure, with Mint she's going to get a lot better performance out of whatever PC we get than she would with Windows.īut I am little concerned about hardware compatibility. She really only uses her PC for Internet access. She's had a lot of trouble with Windows so I'm going to set her up with Linux Mint instead. I need to get a new computer for my mother, who is 76.
